NORWAY: free fruit in schools
In Norway all pupils get fruit provided each day, up to the end of seconday school.
This is very popular with the students. Some schools choose to distribute the fruit at lunchtime. At Sandbekken we serve the fruit first thing in the morning as the pupils gather for their half-hourly "registration period" which we call "basis tid".
The fruit menu changes almost every day, according to what fruit is in season. Sometimes carrots are served. The fruit comes from a wholesale fruit and vegetable distributor, and we can't decide which fruit the pupils get. The regular selection is apples, oranges or clementines, pears, bananas, carrots and occasionally sharon fruit (or persimmon).
The most popular fruit is bananas. We know this because we've asked the pupils!
One of our classes, 9F, had fun making a little advertising poster for the free fruit.
