Eating habits Norwegian pupils have very varied eating habits.
Breakfast: In the cross-section of pupils in the survey in February 2014, all ate breakfast. Typically for Norway, open-faced sandwiches were eaten by all the pupils. Many also ate oatmeal porridge. At weekends some ate bacon and eggs. Milk, yogurt, smoothie and juice were very popular. Pancakes, crispbreads, tea and water, nuts and cod liver oil were also recorded.
Lunch is a simple, cold meal which the pupils take with them to school. There is no tradition of serving a hot meal at midday in school in Norway, but some schools have a small canteen with a very modest selection of foods on offer. The packed lunch is very similar to breakfast. Almost all the pupils ate open-faced sandwiches. Many eat fruit. Some eat cold pizza, waffles, salad, yogurt or chocolate buns. Most drink water or flavoured milk.
Dinner is usually a hot meal and is eaten at home. Many pupils have organized training early in the evening and must eat dinner before or after the rest of the family. Meat dishes are slightly more popular then fish dishes. Pasta is more popular than potatoes, followed by rice. Vegetables or salad are eaten by almost everyone. Other dishes were pancakes, pizza, sausages, eggs. Most drink water with dinner, but some drink fizzy soft drinks. Desserts are not common after dinner on weekdays.
